Violas Wire: 8º Meeting of Portugal and Brazil in S. Martin Amoreiras.


In the days 10 and 11 November, S. Martin Amoreiras, county of Odemira, receives the 8th Meeting of wire Violas, that combines the traditions of Portugal and Brazil.

In order to enhance and preserve the Viola Portuguese Wire, will take place in days 10 and 11 November 2018, in the House of the People S. Martin Amoreiras, county of Odemira, the 8th Meeting of wire Violas, an initiative organized by the Center for Appreciation of Viola Campaniça and Impromptu Sing, and will feature guitars from all over the continent and islands and Brazil.

It is intended that this is an important action to rescue and dignify the regional culture, aimed at all musicians, ethnographers and curious who show an interest in traditional music.

The meeting will be attended by the Viola Campaniça (Alentejo), purple Braguesa (Minho), Viola Beiroa (Beira Baixa), Viola Wire (Madeira), Earth Viola (Azores) and Viola Caipira (Minas Gerais Brazil), plucked by Pedro Mestre and Carlos Loução, José Barros, Ricardo Fonseca, Vítor Sardinha, Bruno Bettencourt and Chico Lobo, respectively.

Spontaneity as these violas "talk" allows to realize their common popular origins and differences that you have been introduced by the communities that use them. The wheel dances to religious festivals, passing by despiques, the wire string guitars are the traditional folk instrument of choice. The presence of these players - all excellent performers - is an opportunity not only to enjoy the sound but also the history of their violas.

The conversations will be highlighted, enthralled by the musicians / actors players, as well as some guest researchers, namely Ivan Vilela (Instrumentalist and professor at the University of São Paulo, Brazil), Salwa Castelo-Branco (Ethnomusicologist and professor of the Institute of Ethnomusicology - Center for Studies in Music and Dance of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa), Domingos Morais (Teacher / ethnomusicologist the IELT - Institute of Traditional Literature Studies at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and Manuel Morais (Musicologist and Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Évora).

To complete the Saturday program, day 10 November, there will be the show "Violas Wire Concert", by 21.00 hours, Social Center in Amoreiras-Gare, with free admission.

On 11 Workshops will be held November, first with builders Viola Campaniça, Daniel Luz, Orlando Trinidad and chordophones Factory Art & Music, and then devoted to each Violas at the meeting. Registration for the workshops should be made by contacting violasdearame@gmail.com

The meeting will end Wire Violas, by 16.00 hours, Sing with a session of Improvisation: Despique and jolt, accompanied the Viola Campaniça, in Taberna do Lagar, S. Martin Amoreiras, following a Magusto. During the two days one chordophones exhibition can be visited, in the House of the People S. Martin Amoreiras, which will give due prominence to the Viola Campaniça.
